Update February 2010

February 13, 2010 - In case anyone is wondering...    this site IS still active!    I just haven't had much time to hike this fall/winter or to devote to keeping up the website.   My day job is very busy these days.   I have 100's and 100's of photos from hikes over the last several years, including an Athens Big Fork Trail backpack that was spectacular.  I'll try to get those posted.

To anyone who posted a comment lately, the comment module wasn't acting up and wound't let me reply...  and I didn't have time to repair it until today.   So, apologies for not answering comments posted in the last few weeks.

I guess people use the site, which is great!   Even this nonsense gets 100's of reads/year.   ;- )

What is this?

This is just the pointless ramblings of dismalhiker (started Aug 30, 2008) who, every now and then, might say something useful about hiking and backpacking...   or, maybe not.

GPS used for tracks on this site...

GPS information on this site is from a Garmin 60csx handheld GPS.   It is incredibly accurate compared to my previous Magellans and it's ability to pull in signals under heavy forest canopy or in canyons is amazing.  Highly recommended.

I actually purchased an external antenna when I bought it and so far haven't needed it.   The GPS is held in a camera pouch that is attached to my left backpack strap in front.   This locates it a) high up off the ground, b) in the open, c) upright and d) easy to reach when I want to look at it.   I tried it this way right after buying it and have never needed to use the external antenna.
