South Forche Lafave River (side ravine) - Mar-17-2007
This was an off-trail bushwhack to a small side canyon off the South Forche Lafave River near Hollis, Ar.
It is entirely "off-trail" but its not really bushwhacking either. There are roads in this area and much of this hike is on old dirt roads.
The "canyon" is not the Grand Canyon, but it is interesting (geologically) and it has some nice exposed, upturned rock layers. There are interesting areas where layer upon layer has been turned on edge by tectonic buckling and this is one of the places where there's a lot of it exposed.
There is nothing very difficult about this place. One caution... I think the timber companies may have plans (or have already done it) to cut down all the trees in this area. Don't be surprised if you find all of the trees cut down. Although this is a WILD WILD WILD area that SHOULD be wilderness... it is not wilderness. In reality, it is timber land and, more likely than not, it will be clear cut sooner or later.
