Bloodwort (continued): The sap contains sanguinarine, which is a highly toxic alkaloid that acts by blocking the sodium-potassium-ATPase of cells (essential for the life of all cells). Sanguinarine is also a potent anti-platelet agent and COX-1 inhibitor. Sanguinarine can be fatal when taken internally and even getting the sap on the skin can destroy tissue and cause a sore. Amazingly, sanguinarine is used as an additive in toothpaste and mouthwash!
