Little Maumelle River water trail?
September 18, 2008 - Just added new photos of a canoe trip on the Little Maumelle River. The Little Maumelle River flows through Pinnacle Mountain State Park, passes through a swamp and bald cypress forest to the east, passes south of Two Rivers Park and empties into the Arkansas River at the I-430 bridge.
The Little Maumelle is a hidden gem in this area. It's truly spectacular as it winds through cypress forests, past giant lily pads, through multiple channels, past multiple side channels teaming with fish (and ?) and past 100's of birds. If there ever was a place for a "water trail", this is it. I've wondered for years why the Little Maumelle isn't already recognized and protected as the ecological jewel that it is. Recently, on the American Trails website, I ran across an article that discusses the Little Maumelle in the context of a new Arkansas Water Trails program. Maybe there's hope after all! This would be a huge step forward if it comes to pass.
In the next day or two, I'll put up a page on the Little Maumelle. In the mean time, here are a few photos.
Beautiful !
Beautiful the place, beautiful the pictures (as usual).
Hi Steve,
Thanks for the positive comments about the photos. I have many more and also photos of other canoe trips on the Little Maumelle that I will post later. The place is incredible and taking great photos in a place like this is quite easy because of the many opportunities.
This is a truly incredible place. It must be protected. It is indeed a rarity for such a wild place to be within the city limits of a metropolitan area!
